Alternative Poverty Eradication Bureau for Africa (A.P.E.B.A.) is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization dedicated to eliminating extreme poverty and gender inequality across South Sudan. APEBA’s main mission is to help build the capacity of the grassroots communities and local partners in all its operational areas in South Sudan and other developing nations so that they may work to eradicate poverty through the provision of basic life necessities while restoring, maintaining, and fully respecting the self-dignity of the individuals being aided.
APEBA was established in 2004 by its founding President David Luoy Top, MA, after attending a peace conference in Fangak, Jonglei State, South Sudan in March of the same year (2004). After witnessing the suffering in the eyes of the orphan children, widows, youth, disabled persons, and other vulnerable groups in that area and across South Sudan. David consulted with his colleagues in both Africa, Canada, USA, and Australia to undertake this life-saving initiative.
APEBA was first registered in South Sudan as an NGO in 2006 with SSRRC at the national and local levels. It was also registered with other relevant authorities including Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Finance respectively.
Through the support of its members Worldwide, kind support of the Diocese of Calgary (Mission Council), and through fundraising drives, APEBA was able to establish its first Rehabilitation Centre in Guit County, Unity State, South Sudan in 2006 with initial 10 sawing Machines for tailoring project that later expanded to Akobo, Jonglei, and Maiwut Upper Nile States, South Sudan. Before the eruption of the civil war in December 2013, APEBA was able to implement various projects that included orphans and widows support programs and community peacebuilding programs in Guit, Rubkona and Mayom counties Unity State. Those projects were sponsored/supported by PACT South Sudan, Norwegian Embassy, and other likeminded partners.
Our Mission
APEBA believes in bridging and building the capacity of the local communities and community partners through self-reliance and sustainable projects that alleviate poverty and address social inequalities. APEBA strives to enable the underprivileged populations to regain their basic human dignity and take control of their lives to care for their families and communities. .
APEBA’s Objectives
- To provide food, quality health care and other basic necessities to any and all vulnerable groups in the South Sudan, especially orphaned and needy children;
- To provide tailoring training to widows, underprivileged mothers, and disabled persons to create income generating businesses;
- To provide clean drinking water and sanitation to combat diseases and create a healthy living;
- To relieve poverty in the South Sudan by providing agricultural materials and supplies;
- To assist those in South Sudan by providing vocational and life-skills trainings;
- To advance education in South Sudan by providing literacy programs, peacebuilding trainings and Library services;
- To provide women and youth leadership training programs to beneficiaries across South Sudan;
- To provide after school tutoring and scholarship programs for the low-income children and youth in South Sudan;
- To provide small business trainings and provide microfinance support to qualified beneficiaries;
